Ballet at the Conservatory

Full Suite of Classical Classes
The Conservatory offers a full suite of ballet classes and private instruction for all ages and skill levels year-round at the Falmouth and Barnstable campuses.

Students are taught classical ballet with emphasis on technique, placement, posture, execution, musicality, ballet vocabulary (French), poise, grace, elegance and joy. The teaching method is Vaganova-based with influences from the Royal Ballet School and the Cecchetti Method. Advanced students benefit from the Balanchine Method.

Many advanced classes are taught en pointe with piano accompaniment. Students benefit greatly when they see their instructor demonstrate en pointe. Also, their phrasing and musicality improves with live music.

Performing is the ultimate goal and reward for students in Technique classes. In Repertoire class, they use the skills learned in technique classes to master and execute steps and phrases in story ballets such as Dances in a Secret Garden, The Nutcracker and Legend of the Witch, Moll Dyer.

Through ballet, students develop team work, cooperation, professional courtesy, discipline and poise – qualities that will remain with them throughout their lives.

Jane E. Caputo: Inspired Direction
“My mission is to encourage and enhance the joy we experience through movement and dance. There is nothing as stunning as a young dancer’s artistic journey.” --Jane E. Caputo, Artistic Director & Instructor

Under Jane Caputo’s inspired leadership, the Conservatory’s Ballet Program has grown in size and stature. The bar is set high for young dancers to continually develop and excel; the instruction is always nurturing and encouraging.

Before moving to Cape Cod, she studied with Edward Villella and Mimi Paul of the NYC Ballet and Victoria Shifflett of the American Ballet Theater. In 1995, she founded the St. Mary’s Ballet Company and School in Maryland and served as its artistic director, principal dancer and choreographer for 13 years. The school flourished under her direction and was known for the high caliber of its students and its original ballet productions. In 2000, The Washington Post presented her original ballet, Legend of the Witch, Moll Dyer, its coveted “Hot Ticket” award.

Our Students Are Going Places…
Throughout her career, many of Jane Caputo’s students have become accomplished dancers, receiving substantial scholarships and, in some cases, coveted training stipends with the American Ballet Theatre School and Joffrey Pre-professional Schools in New York City, the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, DC, and the Boston Ballet School, among others. Their professional careers have been equally inspiring, including appearances with the Moscow Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet, the National Ballet Company and many other prestigious dance companies.
